The Creation of Under the Bodhi Tree

Under the Bodhi Tree is a new musical created by Jingoo Lee (Music) and Julie Song (Book and Lyrics).  For Jingoo and Julie, this has been a ten year journey from the original concert performance in Korean, the English workshop at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and now; a fully staged English production opening May 2nd, 2017 through May 14th, 2017 in Times Square at: The Royal Family Performing Arts Space.  (145 W 46th Street, NYC)

Current Production

May 2nd thru May 14th, you will be able to experience a fully staged and designed production starring an outrageously talented group of Equity and Non-Equity performers.  The performance will be held inside The Church of St. Mary the Virgin of Times Square.  The Church of St. Mary of Times Square, St. Mary's or Smokey Mary's, was built in 1868 and has supported the arts year after year by choosing to have a theatre in the Parish House. (145 W 46th Street, Third Floor)

RECENT WORKSHOP

This past November, 2016, we rehearsed a staged workshop of "Under the Bodhi Tree" in The Royal Family Performing Arts Center and performed at NYU's Graduate Musical Theatre Black Box.  We have two performers from that workshop that have also been cast in the current stage production.  There have been many supporters of this musical over the last few years and we are thankful for all the voices that have made these songs ring through the rafters.  From the success of this workshop, came the need to produce the current productions at The Royal Family Performing Arts Center.

KOREAN PERFORMANCE

The origins of the musical start in Korea.  The original book and score were written entirely in Korean.  Jingoo and Julie have committed to creating an English Version for Western audiences.  Matthew Mezzacappa began as an integral part of the English adaptation for the NYU workshop and Daniel Lincoln, Julie Song and other creative team have worked tirelessly since January to continue the adaptation for the current production.
